...of the one, Nicodemus, the man of learning, who went to Jesus and said, "It has been said that thou sayest that a man must be born again. Born of the Spirit before he can enter into the kingdom of God. Explain these things to me that I might understand."
And Jesus said, "Thou understandeth not the things of the Earth, how then cạn you expect to understand the things of the spirit?"
And now, two thousand years later, times and people have not really changed. There are many as Nicodemus in authority, who are in a high place and who teach and preach to the people, and yet they, themselves, are blind. And they know not and can see not the things of the spirit. And when such a one came face to face with the Master, Himself, the Master realised that it was a waste of time and energy trying to explain anything to a mind which was closed to reality and to spiritual truth.
But now, things are slowly changing inasmuch as those that can see and hear and who communicate with the world of spirit, can do so without fear of terrific punishment. Christ knew and expected crucifixion. He knew that death, physical torture, would be His lot. Therefore it is with great pleasure and a sense of humble thankfulness that we see and realise that there are they upon the Earth plane who are aware of our presence and who are willing to listen to what we have to say, although they cannot see for themselves or hear.
And it is because, even to-day, the harvest is plentiful and the labourers are few, that we so readily come to give of that which we have. And we bring to your imagination a great reservoir, full to overflowing, with the living waters. But, we must needs have the one here and there who will act, as it were, as the pipe line, who will help us through this dark and terrifying world which you call Earth, to make a spiritual irrigation system whereby the living waters of love and truth and light can be carried and dispersed to the place where the soil is fertile, and where the seed lies waiting, dormant and still in the hearts and minds of men.
And always, always we are seeking and searching for the glimmer of light which denotes the open mind. For in the example which we have given you, you can see that even Jesus Himself could not force knowledge, could not give unto another His own faith.
But, the ignorance and the materialism is so rife upon the Earth, that we must needs plead for the labourers to work in this great harvest. As you go forth with love in your hearts, and with wisdom and understanding beginning to develop, and you look upon this one and that, and you must needs at times, as it were, lower your vibrations, so that you can enter into the aura of those with whom you come into contact, there flows from you a feeling of deep sympathy and compassion, and even though you realise, as Christ did, when talking to Nicodemus, it is ridiculous to try to give such a one your very own treasure, and yet, you know, and you have the power to pray. And this compassion and sympathy which wells up in your heart for the so-called ignorant, albeit this one may be worldly-wise, as was Nicodemus, may be in a high position, may have plenty of this world's goods, and yet ignorant, ignorant of reality and of the spirit. And cannot understand the meaning of any birth except the human and the physical. And you realise that you cannot talk of the things which you know in your heart to be true and wise and good, and yet you must help this one in the way, or on the level, in which you find yourself with this same person.
And this compassion, and this desire to help, will act as the water flowing through the pipes and coming through the tiny hole at this very same place, and it will act on the tiny seed that is buried in the heart of the ignorant one, the younger soul, the little child, and perchance, before that one passes hence into the spiritual world, the water, the living waters which were created through your compassion, through your sympathy without bitterness, and without contempt, through the developed tolerance which is always a sign of one who has been born again, for, in very truth, there are many who, through an accident or through meeting with some other person, or some great tragedy, entering into their Earth life, are forced, as it were, to make the search because of their deep grief and deep sorrow. And then, stumbling across the realisation that life goes on after death, they have proof of this, and they are filled with a great wonderment, and a great excitement.
But, the beginning of all things must be small, even as the seed of love, that mighty power, is small. And when one is born again into reality, even this great and glorious second birth, must have its very small beginning. And there must be helplessness, nakedness, nothingness, emptiness, absolute humility, and meekness of spirit. All these things are essential. These are part and parcel of the long pregnancy before the second birth can take place. And with this, with this humility and humbleness of spirit, one must walk many a weary mile through the plains and the deserts and the jungles of Earth, looking first to this one and to that and allowing, allowing the tiny trickles of the living water to flow through them to those that are sick. For in very truth these are they, as Jesus said, who need the physician.
And albeit, we realise that those that are very near and dear to you, your own kith and kin, as it were, are so very often in need of this living water. But your very love for them, and your power of endurance, and your acceptance of them as they are, signifies and symbolises a laying down of the precious pipe which will carry the water from the great reservoir, from the heart and mind of the Creator of all creation. It is this tolerance, this forbearance, and this putting up with, this art of lowering one's vibrations, and making these people feel at home and at peace in your company. And this is why they say of a true labourer, "I feel relaxed and uplifted in your company."
True they have taken from you, true that for a time you will feel drained, and trust it is also that you must go on alone. That they cannot come to the place where you are, any more than Jesus could find a place, as we have told you before, to lay down His head. Only those who gathered near to Him and around Him, loved Him, because they knew that He gave to them. And yet, He could not spiritually or mentally, lie down with these little ones. He was not at home with them, although they were at home with Him, and thought His love, His mercy, His compassion, and drank to the very dregs this love that was pouring forth from Him to them.
And so, fear not the loneliness, but travel on, always drawing from the great fountain, and we in turn draw from the higher waters, from the higher planes, and so it goes on. But the most important part of this whole system, and remember this, remember these words, is the laying down of the tiny pipes along the dark and dismal tracks of the Earth plane, with the tiny trickles of water coming forth in this barren place into the hearts and minds of man, through this spiritual irrigation system. Do not weary. Do not be afraid. The work is being done, and much is being accomplished.
Despite the great need to help people understand the true nature of life and immortality, many people are not in a position to receive this information. Just your compassion for them opens up a channel for the seed to be planted in good time.
