…because he told them that He would soon be leaving the Earth. And He said, "I will not leave you comfortless. Thou shalt have another comforter." And He was speaking of truth. He knew that these few who had followed Him faithfully, although He understood that they could not understand fully. He knew that the desire to search was very strong within each being. For did He not choose them one by one. And because He had developed psychic faculties, He could see into the mind of each and every one. He understood because of His developed powers of discernment and discrimination, the inner longing, the inner Spiritual ambition, of each one. And He knew that they would go on searching for truth, and He had already told them that he who would seek would surely find.
And we must remember this very important fact, that He Himself, said that every man must seek for the treasure that he would own. And the treasure, the Spiritual treasure to be found by every true seeker is truth. As much as they are able to receive and to cope with at this same time. And it was true, and it was true, it is true that Jesus the man, left no true seeker comfortless.
And because a man must be born again before he can enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, into the true Kingdom. We are not talking about the summer land or the so-called paradise of the everyday man, the unregenerate, the unthinking, but we are talking of that state which is referred to as sitting on the right hand of God.
In other words, of being at home with all that is true, all that is good, all that is just. And before one can reach this state, one must develop all the Spiritual virtues of compassion, and tolerance and humility, and sincerity, wisdom and love. No easy matter.
And there are many who think they have arrived, or have developed all these virtues who can fall at a moment's notice and realise in their hearts that they have in very truth, achieved very little.
Because the man who is born again of the Spirit while still in the body, is a very rare find, because the world beckons with such a strong force. It is almost impossible to see through the clouds and through the darkness and through the fogs of fear and ignorance, the true light of the Spirit. Now this is why we are told that the angels rejoice when one man repenteth. They are more concerned with this than with all the repented angels, as it were, in heaven. Why? Because all normal beings, all average beings, who pass hence, immediately recognise the great truth of personal survival. Wherefore the summerland and the so-called paradise, and the heaven which we read and hear about, is full of people who realise the truth of the living, everlasting, immortal Spirit.
But, what can they do? they have already left the training ground, the great school, the great place of learning how to live, how to develop one's character, how to become divine while still in the body, and these cannot be used as agents in the same way that a human being upon the Earth, in the midst of the great darkness, can be used. Do you see? This is why there is indeed more rejoicing when one man upon the Earth repenteth, as it were, recognises his own self as nothing and the Spirit of truth and reality as everything.
Now here is a torch, here is a beacon light, here is one immersed, as it were, in the darkness, who can really bring peace and comfort to all with whom he comes into contact. But this state, and all these things, are a state of mind, cannot possibly be achieved without great struggle. And the work that must be done through life when one begins to develop these finer qualities, because of the realisation within of the relationship to the Spirit, to God, and to Christ, then one must begin to prepare, to make a place wherein the living waters may….
Heart of It
I will not leave you comfortless" (John 14:18) sets the transcript's central claim: what Christ promised wasn't the comfort of his own continued presence, but truth itself, given to whoever genuinely seeks it — "he who would seek would surely find," a promise the transcript insists holds specifically for anyone still searching, not just those he walked beside.
Its sharpest distinction is between merely surviving death and being genuinely "born again" while still in the body. Most who pass on, the transcript says, simply recognise "the truth of personal survival" — real, but passive knowledge rather than achieved transformation — and precisely because they've already left "the great school" of Earth life, they can no longer do the work that actually develops character. This is why, the transcript argues, there's "more rejoicing" over one still-living person who genuinely turns toward truth than over "all the repented angels... in heaven" — not because the dead don't matter, but because only someone still in the body, still in darkness, can become "a torch, a beacon light," actively useful to others still struggling.
The transcript is honest that this state is neither automatic nor secure once reached: "many who think they have arrived... can fall at a moment's notice," discovering that what felt like real progress was, in fact, very little. Real transformation, on this account, isn't a threshold crossed once but a struggle sustained continuously against a world that "beckons with such a strong force" that seeing through it to "the true light of the Spirit" is called, without exaggeration, almost impossible — which is precisely what makes each person who manages it, even briefly, so valuable to everyone still searching around them.
