"Gracious Spirit dwell with me, I myself would gracious be."
Children of the light, you have heard it said that it is not that which goeth into a man which defileth, but that which cometh forth from his heart and mind. And this is true.
It is most important that those who profess to seek after truth should realise this very important fact, that the knowledge that all men are brothers, one with another, and that all are related in the same way to the creator of all creation, then this knowledge alone is enough to make a seeker realise that love can only draw unto itself it's own like.
A true Spirit of compassion and sympathetic understanding and true tolerance.
Therefore, as you have been saying, it is a great gift and a great honour to be able to raise or lower one's vibrations according to that which is necessary at the moment.
And you have both had great experience concerning this. For Mary has oftimes, that she has found it necessary, during the various visitations which she has made, to leave herself behind.
And we understand that this is not an easy thing to do. We know, because we are doing this continually. Coming back to talk to you, through the thick density of Earth vibration, is indeed a very difficult thing to do. But because we are drawn to you by the power of love, we find it is well worth the effort. And we find, that when once we break through these so-called mists, this lower, grosser, vibration, we are at home in your aura. Here we are on a like vibration. Here we find minds that are open to receive that which we have to impart.
But it is not always so. Because you yourselves, through your thoughts and prayers, and the faith you have in us, though the grace of God, you send us on many journeys. You send us, as it were, to visit this one and that in pain and sickness, both of the mind and the body, and, dear Mary, it is necessary for us so very often to leave ourselves behind.
You see, we have to do this very same thing, through your very requests you not only ask us to go and attend to those still in the flesh, but there are they who come hence, who find themselves in a very strange world, who have not sought on what one could say a very wise path, who have believed without seeking, without trying of themselves to discover the meaning of truth or love. And because you pray for these when they pass on, we are obliged to go and do for then what we can. And we find, as you can guess, many and varied vibrations emanating from these little ones. And no, dear children, you can see now how important it is that you should have had to practice this leaving oneself behind, during your Earth life, because if you really love, and you do, you will have to do this, even in greater measure if you really want to carry on in this work when you pass hence.
But, we bring you words of comfort and cheer. Because you will have freedom of movement. Already mentally, you have this freedom, Already in your mind you are aware of this great freedom. Of this power. Without moving your body or walking one step, you are aware of the fact that you can help through thought.
But you still have the encumbrance of the body. When you realise that now you send out a thought to one to whom you would give help, but you cannot actually see the help being received and the power at work. You have to depend upon your faith. That is why, during your Earthly journey, faith is so important. Without it, you could do absolutely nothing. But because of this faith, when you pass hence, your powers of movement will be even greater. And not only will you be able to think about a person, that you have left on Earth, or Spirit people that are on different planes, perhaps higher or lower spheres of being, but you will naturally, at the moment of thought go and see for yourself exactly what is taking place.
And you will find that you will be more than grateful because of the practice you have put in of leaving yourself behind. Putting yourself out, as the saying is.
And not only will this wonderful freedom of movement be made your own, but you will be able to read people's minds, and if there is a certain light emanating from their aura, this will be a signal that you will be able to create for them, with your thought power, the things they need. You will recognise the difference between their wants and their needs, and you will be able to create, to create, with just a thought, and see this taking place. This thing, these things, these happenings, in their being, in their make-up.
But now, let us enlighten you concerning the things that happen through your faith, your thoughts, and your prayers. You send out to us the thoughts concerning this one or that, you have learned not to ask for specific things. You say, "Thy will be done." And we go to these places. We examine the aura and the conditions around and in these of your friends, whether it be the children of Earth or those that have passed hence. And through your direction of thought we see and examine their needs. And very often we have to call upon higher influences, those who have more knowledge, more understanding, more wisdom, than we. And then again the power is passed down from these to us, and then in some strange way which we cannot explain because words are inadequate, you will have to see this for yourself to understand. We use you and any that are praying with real, deep, sincerity, and the so-called miracles take place.
And we want you to know that since we made you aware, we helped you to understand the passing through the narrow gate, we are able to use you much more easily and freely, and the restrictions that were before have now gone.
Through your body your physical self is naturally restricted, but through your mind, through your powers of concentration and prayer, much work is being done.
And now, Mary, the Quaker friend of the little circle will say a few words.
Dear Sister, it is with great pleasure that I come hence to talk with you. I still feel the great love in my heart for the Quaker movement, and I still feel very close to those who gather in the different places of worship in the house of friends. And there is no doubt about it that the power emanating from these places are very, very great indeed. But, in this Little wooden hut, in its extreme simplicity, I am indeed at home. And I ask you to join with me in the silence, with your helpers, with your teachers, and with your guides. Because it is my work to impress upon the people of Earth, if I can break through to my friend Charles and his wife the great value of the psychic. But it is only necessary to such an extent, that we may make our voices heard. You understand? It is only through the quiet, through the silence, that those can hear our voices.
And then we want to talk to all the world. I have never so much to be able to speak. But this can only come first through the understanding of the terrific value of silence in the world. For there is too much talk, too much noise(?), as you yourself realise. And so for the silence. Thank you.
Mary, when I walked upon the Earth plane, I wrote many books. I preached many sermons. I sat at this meeting and that. I sat on many committees. I was sincere and truly loved my follow men. But I had not made the knowledge that you have, my own. But Charles, one of us, is making his search and I've asked you to do just one thing..…
"Leaving oneself behind" describes a discipline central to the work of both worlds: setting aside one's own concerns, even one's own vibration, to attend fully to another. The transcript makes explicit what's often implicit in this collection — that this is genuinely difficult, an effort even for those in spirit, who must "break through the thick density of Earth vibration" to reach the ones they love. What's asked of Mary in life is training for what will be asked, in greater measure, after death: the capacity to set self aside entirely in service of another's need.
A distinction is drawn between prayer answered by faith alone, while still bound to a body — sending a thought without ever seeing its effect — and prayer that will, after death, become sight: going to see for oneself, at the very moment of thought, what is actually taking place. Faith, in this account, is what earthly limitation demands in place of the direct seeing that comes later — not a lesser thing, but the necessary discipline of trusting without confirmation. The distinction drawn between people's wants and their needs is worth noting too — thought-power is described as answering the latter, discerned through the aura, not the former, which is close to the transcript "Search For The Pearl" and its distinction between happiness that fades and the peace that doesn't.
The transcript closes with a second, distinct voice — a Quaker speaker, drawn to the "extreme simplicity" of the little wooden hut over grander places of worship, and insisting, gently but firmly, on the value of silence over speech. Having written many books and preached many sermons in life, sincerely, he confesses that none of it gave him what he now recognises Mary has found — a knowledge reached not through committee or sermon, but through quiet.
