My talk with you this day will be of a personal nature. You have proved to us that you are mindful of the needs of others. And we have decided to endeavour to give to you a picture of the way we work with and through you.
For many years it seemed to you that you walked alone. It seemed that the road on which you walked had no turning or ending. The ground itself seemed bright and hard with no relief. And we were so often aware of the heaviness, the weariness and the tiredness which came through the feeling within yourself of the failing to be able to understand. We were with you in those dark hours, days, weeks, months. When you felt that life was purposeless. When you could not make any real meaning of the very life which you were living. And yet it was at those times when we were nearer to you than your own hands and feet. Because, without this feeling of failure, one cannot possibly succeed.
And the after the soul's searching, after the so-called heat of the long and dreary road, you saw, and felt drawn, to the leafier lanes, one here and one there, and you could not see, you could not see those that stood beckoning, gently calling through the mind, "Come, and rest awhile." And we will impart to you the things of the Spirit and truth as we see it”. We always had a very difficult time persuading you to leave the everyday, the practical, the usual. This has been our difficulty. Not the material, but we found it very difficult to break that rather misguided sense of duty. Do you understand? We are finding it difficult to breathe our true thoughts into the mind of the medium because she does not know you as we know you. But duty, as you practised it, for so many years, was not a pleasure.
But it was this very desire to see things through which held us together, But we would like to tell you this. We could have made things so much easier for you if you had eased up a little more. Now this driving force, this having to do with the head down, is a natural trait of people born under the planet Leo. This walking and living with this natural tendency, combined with the desire to know and to seek after truth, is paying, as it were, it's dividends. Also, the guilt feelings, the guilt complex, in yourself, have been very highly developed and taken too much notice of. This trait, this characteristic, has also been a great source of trouble to us. We have had great difficulty in keeping this under control.
Are you aware, we think you are, that there have indeed been times when we thought we should lose you for a time because of mental illness? And we, you and I, and all these friends with you, haven't we a lot to be thankful for?
But now all these things are behind us. And we have left the straight, hard, path which you feel that you have walked. And now at last we come to a bend in the road, and the scene has changed. There is a softness in the atmosphere. There is a gentle breeze.
We are talking of course about mental states, you understand? And see, we can rest awhile. There is no longer the burning desire to press on. And this is good. This is good. It would have been so much better for you and for others if this sense of duty could have been curbed just a little, it has been overdone. But, all is well. All is well.
And now at last you feel that you can stand and stare, and this is very, very good. Not only spiritually, mentally, but physically. And whilst you stand and stare with the body quiet and still, we can talk into your ear, for in very truth we are always by your side. More so now than we have over been because of this change of scene and this different way, this different road.
But at the same time we would stress upon you this very fact, that this particular leafy, shady, quiet road could not be reached had you walked any other path. This is a definite part of the hard, glittering, narrow road. And we would like to tell you also that there are very few who choose to walk this particular road, First, we knew and you knew before you came into this Earth existence, this incarnation, that the work which you had to do, the truth which you had to discover whilst going through the Earth experience, you knew this before in the heaven world, but to learn it and to realise it whilst upon the Earth plane, is very, very difficult, and we have told you before that this is essential before one can really progress in the Spirit world. And so you chose, and we helped you to choose, to be born under this planet. We know that the physical body coming into the physical world at this time, would be very dominating, would have to be in control. Would have to see and do things right through to the bitter end. And yet, the first and foremost thing you knew you had to do was to bring back into your consciousness, through the deep unconscious, the things that you learnt and knew in the Spirit world. You had died many times as a human being…
Even the driest, most purposeless-feeling stretch of a life can be a time of the closest companionship — "we were nearer to you than your own hands and feet" — not despite the difficulty, but because it. The transcript is direct about this: "without this feeling of failure, one cannot possibly succeed." The hard road isn't a detour from the gentler one that follows; it's the only way to reach it. There is no shortcut to the leafy, quiet path except through the long, hard, glittering one.
